The shape properties of coarse aggregates are important when determining the performance of materials or mixtures. Proportional Calipers are time-saving devices used for the rapid determination of the percentages of flat and elongated particles in coarse aggregate fractions of 3/8in (9.5mm) or larger. Units are constructed of steel for durability, precision engineered for precision.

To determine the shape of the flat particle sizing, adjust the width of one piece to the larger end of the Caliper, then tighten the pivot screw. Without adjusting the Caliper, check the same particle at the smaller measuring end of the Caliper. If the particle fits into the smaller space, it is considered flat. Long particle determination follows the same steps. If the particle is larger than the smaller measurement in either case, then the particle is neither considered straight nor long.
